AlloyDB Essentials

This 2-3 hour Cloud Sparks session is a short, interactive introduction to AlloyDB, Google Cloud’s PostgreSQL-compatible database.

In AlloyDB Essentials we look at what makes AlloyDB different from PostgreSQL on Cloud SQL and why that matters for demanding workloads. The session is split in two parts. In AlloyDB Administration Essentials you learn about the architecture, including disaggregated storage, WAL processing, read pool scaling and automatic data tiering, and then see how to create and manage an instance: configuration, network connectivity, connection methods, scaling, and backup and recovery.

In AlloyDB Optimization Essentials the focus moves to performance. You learn how Index Advisor recommends indexes to speed up queries, how Adaptive Autovacuum manages database resources dynamically, and how the Columnar Engine accelerates analytical queries. Each part ends with a knowledge-check quiz to confirm what you picked up.

The session is aimed at data engineers and database administrators. Participants should be comfortable working in Google Cloud with Cloud Shell and the Google Cloud Console and have basic knowledge of PostgreSQL management; some familiarity with Cloud SQL is useful. SQL and relational database basics are not covered.
